new LCD asus monitor problems
Solved: Issue solved with DP to HDMI cable, both gpu and monitor work they are just software incompatible on HDMI.

Hey everyone,

I’m having an issue with my new ASUS VA259HGA Monitor and could really use some advice. I’ve already submitted a case with ASUS, but I figured this community might have insights into monitor quirks like this.

The Issue:

The monitor works flawlessly at 120Hz HDMI-to-HDMI with other PCs, and I’ve verified the HDMI cable is fine.
However, with my PC, the monitor does not recognize the HDMI signal at all—no beeps, just "HDMI No Signal" and VGA light stays longer than usual until windows starts.

Testing & Observations:

Before this monitor, I used a VGA-to-HDMI adapter with an older Fujitsu L-22T-4 monitor, which worked fine.
Using VGA-to-HDMI, both the old monitor and the ASUS monitor work with my PC.
If I boot into BIOS using VGA and then switch to HDMI, the ASUS monitor works temporarily but stops after a reboot.
On Debian Linux:
If I start with VGA and switch to HDMI after boot, I see a frozen frame before it stops working(Wayland), and it works almost fully with(X11) but with a black background and no app bar on the bottom 60hz and that virus effect is visible behind moving windows(replicates windows) this only happens on(x11).
The HDMI port on my GPU works fine with DVI to HDMI adapters for other monitors.
when setting up a new OS like Debian the HDMI-HDMI works flawlessly until the next reboot required to enter the system.
Just tested my PC and it works with HDMI to a TV so both my monitor and PC work with other devices on HDMI but not together, ?????????.

Specs:

Motherboard: B450 Aorus Pro (BIOS version F66d - latest)
GPU: RTX 2060 Gaming OC Pro White 6GB
CPU: Ryzen 1600
RAM: 16GB

Additional Details:

My VGA-to-HDMI adapter defaults to 60Hz at 1920x1080 and struggles over that, but I’ve managed to overclock it to 120Hz-125hz at 1024x768.
I’d love to fully utilize 120Hz+ on HDMI 1920x1080 for better performance.

I’m completely stumped because:

The monitor and HDMI cable work with other systems.
My PC works with other monitors HDMI to HDMI 4K, GPU is working no problems.
The HDMI port on my GPU also works with other monitors (via DVI to HDMI adapters).
The ASUS monitor only works with my PC under very specific conditions (e.g., booting via VGA first).

Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Note: this thread will be constanly updated as long as possible I am determined to fix this no matter how long
update:

I managed to make it work in debian 12 with KDE plasma(x11) by unplugging the VGA adapter and plugging hdmi-hdmi cable at log-on screen it doesn't work fully it only shows me previously opened programs(firefox etc...) it plays youtube it's running at 60hz but the background is blacked out and there is no app bar at the bottom and things behave oddly, after a restart I can't replicate it, with a live boot USB I can only set up when it logs on I lose connection(HDMI no signal), I get weird seg faults and EDID errors on, I might try to remove EDID.
I am considering - buying an DP to HDMI cable I know ridiculous it is what it is.
Just tested my PC with a 4K monitor, works flawlessly now this is more puzzling.
if I have to reprogram the kernel and bios from scratch I will do it.

TL;DR
pc works with every other monitor on hdmi
monitor works with every other pc and system on hdmi
they don't work together??

RE: new LCD asus monitor problems
Either there's a problem with the monitor's EDID, or there's a bug in the GPU's firmware. Similar issues with the RTX 3060 were solved with a firmware update, but I don't see an update for the RTX 2060. If the monitor works with other NVIDIA GPUs, then it's likely an issue with the GPU's firmware not being able to handle something in the EDID. In that case, you should contact NVIDIA support because this is something they would need to fix. You should also contact Gigabyte support in case they have a firmware update.

If you have access to another PC with HDMI that works with the monitor, run this and post the test.txt file here so I can check the monitor's EDID: https://www.monitortests.com/edid-test.zip

it looks like it because when running it on recovery mode(debian 12) those errors no EDID but I can't tell if it's the vga or the hdmi outputting them, but also seg faults when I switch to it after boot and log on which seem to crash things, almost like my monitor is trying to inject code into the system or something(it's brand new out of the box), I can run it without EDID by adding a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf apparently but that's a solution a guy that made his own GPU came up with, I will try to get access to a PC to get a edid test but it will be difficult, thanks for replying.

(is it possible to run this file on linux?)

The edid-test needs to be run without the adapter and without any EDID overrides. Do you have Windows or only Debian? I just need some way to get the monitor's HDMI EDID. Debian has a read-edid package with get-edid, but it might not work if the EDID is corrupted.

Also you might have different results with the Nouveau driver vs. NVIDIA's proprietary driver. NVIDIA's driver is less forgiving with EDID errors, so it might not detect the monitor if the EDID is corrupted.

If that doesn't work, the best option to confirm if the EDID is corrupted is to use EDWriter for Windows with an AMD GPU, which can read corrupted EDIDs directly from the monitor (read EDID and save to file): https://www.monitortests.com/forum/Threa...yID-Writer

you are correct it doesn't have any EDID sorry for reiterating to be concise after plugging it in during logon screen and unplugging vga adapter these are the screen shots, I can't open anything I had to enable the konsole shortcut then restart pc and do this

no EDID given by monitor
unfortunately don't have an AMD gpu wish I did in the first place, will update once I get EDID of the monitor on a different PC.

what do you think is the easiest solution to this? hdmi to dp adapter would that even work with no EDID or buying a new gpu or new motherboard? where exactly is the issue to me it seems the monitor and gpu are incompatible.

If the monitor has an invalid EDID, then you need to get it replaced. Don't try to work around a broken monitor. It's only a GPU issue if there's nothing wrong with the EDID. I need to see if there's anything wrong with the EDID to know for sure.

I will take it to a repair shop to swap out the gpu and test the monitor EDID, if it's broken I will RMA.

I am curious if it can still work if I make a custom EDID for the HDMI tho, you have the knowledge here so let me know, I don't like RMA because I don't trust the process, I'd rather run this on a custom EDID until I buy another one.

What cable is it? Can you dump the EDID with that cable?
