DisplayID vs EDID

Can someone help me understand the difference between DisplayID and EDID?

From what I've read, I believe that DisplayID is a newer standard with greater information (such as HDR capability for the target display), but that monitors tend to share both DisplayID and EDID information for improved capability. I also get the sense that many people say "EDID" when they might really be referring to data in DisplayID.

When Windows lists the peak nits capability of an HDR display, is this coming from DisplayID? I don't see anything in EDID specs I've read that would seem to provide that information.

DisplayID is meant to replace EDID, but that hasn't happened yet. DisplayID can also be used as an EDID extension block, which is more common and usually used to define higher resolutions. Hardly any monitors have pure DisplayID currently, and HDMI still uses EDID.

The DisplayID standard doesn't have anything about HDR. Max luminance is in the HDR static metadata data block in the CTA-861 extension block in the EDID. CTA-861 data blocks can also be used with DisplayID.
