RE: Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
Can CRU help me?
I have: Win7 Pro SP1 64bit nVidia GT610 Onkyo TX-NR515 AVR Sony KDL55HX800 Tv I run hdmi from the PC to the Onkyo then to the Tv. The nVidia drivers identify the Onkyo correctly. I have no problems running 1920x1080p60Hz. I have no problems with any HD Audio formats. Everything works great until I power cycle either the Onkyo or the Tv, at which point for a very brief split second the PC thinks it has lost the hdmi connection. The major issue is that WMC can't handle that brief loss of hdmi connection. This PC is supposed to be running Windows Media Center 24/7 for Tv/DVR and if I power cycle the Onkyo or Tv while WMC is playing tv/audio/video then it will black screen, crash, throw an error, and require restarting WMC. So can CRU help me? |

If you added 800x600 in CRU and GPU scaling is not enabled, then the aspect ratio is up to the monitor. If the monitor doesn't have scaling options, then you will have to use GPU scaling. Both AMD and NVIDIA have options to keep the aspect ratio. You don't need to add 800x600 in CRU if you're using GPU scaling because standard resolutions like 800x600 are automatically added by the driver anyway. |

RE: Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
Hi. I read through this thread and did not see any posts detailing the same problem I am having and I'm wondering if CRU could fix this problem. I noticed for it to work the monitor must report a working EDID. I have a Westinghouse LCM 22w3 which normally is capable of 1680x1050. The problem is that the monitor is detected as an Acer AL1714 and my resolution is maxed at 1280x1024. My previous computer (which I used until last week) had this problem also but I was able to set up a custom resolution of 1680x1050 in Nvidia control panel. On this newly built PC I was using Intel HD 4600 graphics and couldn't find a way to set up a custom resolution. The funny thing with that is if I continually unplug and replug the VGA cable, eventually it will revert back to 1680x1050, but only until I reboot and then I'm capped at 1280x1024 again. I also had the problem with an HDMI to DVI cable, so I don't think its the VGA cable. Yesterday I installed a Powercolor Radeon HD 7870 XT Myst edition. I'm using the HDMI to DVI cable and again I'm capped at 1280x1024 with the monitor being detected as an Acer AL1714 and it appears custom resolutions can't be created from Catalyst Control Center. Thanks for any help.
EDIT: Also I forgot to mention that after playing with a few programs like Powerstrip and CRU a little last night, I now have another resolution option of 1920x1080, which I do not think my monitor supports. I never tried to get that resolution with any of the programs though. |

RE: Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
Yes, CRU should help with that issue. My CRT monitor in particular is supposed to max out at 1280x1024 @ 60hz, which is the maximum in the 32bit drivers. However, I've found that it's actually capable of 1280x1024 @ 71hz and even can do 1920x1080 @ 64hz.

The problem is that the monitor is detected as an Acer AL1714 and my resolution is maxed at 1280x1024.It sounds like the monitor has the wrong EDID. CRU can override that as long as the monitor is reporting an EDID, even if it's the wrong one. CRU will only work with the monitor connected to the Radeon card and not the Intel HD 4600. Add 1680x1050 @ 60 Hz as a detailed resolution using the "LCD standard" timing option, and make sure it's listed as the first detailed resolution to indicate that it's the native resolution (you can use the arrow buttons to rearrange them). Get rid of any other resolutions that you don't need (it's safe to remove all the other resolutions), and make sure the extension block is disabled because 1920x1080 could be hiding in there. Then click OK and reboot. If you still have 1920x1080 after that, make sure you didn't add any HDTV resolutions in the Catalyst Control Center (under "My Digital Flat-Panels" -> "HDTV Support"). |

Not having aimed necessarily for a 24Hz multiple, that feels okay going forward. That happens if the vertical total is too low. I did it that way because it works with more monitors. See if this works with your monitor at 72 Hz: H: 1920 48 32 48 128 2048 V: 1080 3 5 29 37 1117 |

Thanks for the reply. I added 1680x1050 @ 60 Hz as the first detailed resolution and deleted all others. There was only one other in detailed resolutions (1280x1024 @ 60.019 Hz) and two in standard resolutions (1280x1024 (5:4) @ 60 Hz and 1152x864 (4:3) @ 75 Hz.) I did not check the Include extension block box. After rebooting and getting to the Starting Windows screen I am left with a black screen. The monitor doesn't go into sleep mode so I assume there is some output to the monitor but I cannot see anything. All I can do is a hard restart then boot into safe mode and reset all displays. |
