Try this and see what happens. This has made me doubt what Windows is saying entirely.

Open up VLC player - I'm using optical from the TV, so I had to change the following setting:

Tools > Preferences...

At the bottom is an option to show advanced settings. Under "Show Settings" click "All".

Then go to... Audio > Check the box that says "Use S/PDIF when available".

At the moment my Windows sound settings say max 2 channels under the supported formats tab for the TV, and when I click "configure" on the TV I only get a stereo option.

That said, when I play this Dolby trailer in VLC my surround system automatically switches to Dolby Digital and plays out of all speakers.

I have no idea what this means, but its progress.

Interestingly, I gave this a crack and same deal - despite Windows only showing 2.0 as an option, VLC and Cyberlink DVD both allowed for 5.1 and the AV receiver was showing the Dolby Digital logo while doing it all. So as best I can tell, I suppose it is working.

would it be possible to use same pc (gtx 1060 gpu) to connect my usual pc sceen 1080p and the crt pc monitor via displayport to vga adapter but also having the crt to run 240p/480i games ? so I won’t need to use 2 computers.

Sounds to me like the Windows 8.1 laptop has switchable graphics, so Intel's driver would handle the HDMI output instead of NVIDIA's driver. I don't know how Intel deals with HDMI audio.

Problem solved. Thanks for pointing this out. I knew this, but never considered it the key issue. In the end it turned out that the Intel drivers I had installed did not support EDID overrides. I installed a new one manually, which was declared by Intel to support them, and it worked. I needed to use CRU, add the block for HDMI audio, restart the driver and also immediately reboot. Some further tweaking will be needed, but I have HDMI sound now. Shark's codecs make bitstreaming easy.

Nice work with ths utility!
I'm running on windows 10 with intel hd 630 + nvidia 1050 (nvidia prime..both active)
I know that the display is overlayed on the intel card anyways.
I have a few questions:
Using the utility I created 3 definitions:
1920x1080 at 50, 60 , 90 and 120 hz (in detailed resolutions)
1920x1080 at 60, 90 and 120 hz (in standrd resolutions)

when going to display settings >> display adapter properties >> monitor

I see only 50, 60 and 90 hz but not 120.

What am I doing wrong?

Why are you putting the same resolutions in two places? What monitor is this?

I don't see why not, but keep in mind that digital connections might not go lower than 25 MHz pixel clock. You could put a second video card in the same computer that has a native analog connection instead of using an adapter.

Hi, thank you and sorry for my bad english.
Im using nvidia gtx 1060 3gb.
My monitor is LG ultrawide 29um59-p using HDMI 1.4 (2560x1080@60hz , 2560x1080@75hz when turn on Freesync by monitor OSD) I can run 75hz with freesync on without any frameskiping.
Im going to OC it to higher refresh rate on native res (2560x1080) , but when i put anything more than 75hz in refresh rate , it going to out of range when i apply , or totaly blackscreen when i put 85hz
It only work on 36-75hz when freesync is on , and 48-75hz when freesync is off
This is default profile when i turn Freesync on and off
Freesync On (75hz)


Freesync Off (60hz)


Im very happy if i can go more than 75hz by anyway.

can it work with 2 different gpus ? never tried that... any special things that needs to be done when running such setup ?

As long as the GPUs are the same brand, like NVIDIA+NVIDIA or AMD+AMD, then both cards will use the same driver, so it won't be a problem. NVIDIA+AMD is also possible, but driver bugs might cause weird issues when mixing GPUs.

The monitor probably doesn't support more than 75 Hz.
