RE: Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
I tried lightboost over the weekend to compare to ASUS 144hz monitor and now my games wont run at 144hz anymore.
I have Windows 8.i and I cant find the cru program to uninstall all of it so my Nvidia drivers will work as before I installed Lightboost and CRU.

Can you plz tell me what steps to properly fix this issue?

Thanks

Good program though

If the custom resolution doesn't match the active resolution, then it's scaled@ 129 Hz using the 1920x1080 @ 120 Hz timing parameters defined by the monitor. CRU can't add scaled resolutions, so there's no way by the GPU. That's how the whole downsampling craze started. NVIDIA's driver is scaling 1920x1440 @ 129 Hz down to 1920x1080 to do that with CRU. NVIDIA's custom resolutions have never appeared in CRU, so I don't know why you're confused about that. CRU creates EDID overrides. NVIDIA's custom resolutions are completely separate.

Ah that's it! Gpu scaling.....I freaking told masterotaku to disable GPU scaling on steam when we were discussing this :/ Makes perfect sense. I'll post back on blurbusters and explain what's going on now.

That also explains why 129hz is the highest refresh rate he can create at that scaled 1920x1440. because 1920x1080@129hz is the highest refresh rate before the monitor starts complaining about range errors Smile

Thanks, ToastyX.

Your post doesn't make any sense. What do you mean you can't find the CRU program? How did you install LightBoost? If you used CRU, run reset-all.exe and reboot. If you used Strobelight, follow the instructions in that thread: https://www.monitortests.com/forum/Threa...and-NVIDIA

I did and now I cant run 144hz while playing Diablo 3 and a few other games.

Lemon, you really should calm down.
There are 2 ways you can get 144 hz refresh rate back.
But first can you tell me:
DOES 144 HZ WORK ON THE WINDOWS DESKTOP?
Did you set your Nvidia drivers to use maximum refresh rate or did you limit the refresh rate the games run at? There's a setting in the Nvidia drivers for this.. I can't see if you're using an Nvidia or AMD Card, I'm a bit tired.

1) run strobelight setup, add 144 hz as one of the options, add your lightboost resolutions (like 100 hz and 120hz strobed) if you want, if you want a "non strobed" 120hz setting that does not have lightboost activated, you can add the 121hz also, then save, exit, then restart the driver by running restart64.exe. Restart64.exe is part of CRU, not part of strobelight, so it's two different files/downloads.

You can also just reboot the computer if you can't find where you installed CRU to (but if you can't find something that you downloaded, you need to really learn the basics of computers and file explorer browsing, as that's a basic thing. If you unzipped CRU And can't find it, (CRU), reset all and restart64.exe, that's on you. We can't help you with that.).

2) (I do this on my XL2720Z since strobelight doesn't work on it, but I unlock lightboost by violating my geforce Laptop's privacy, lol):
Use CRU And add a "LCD Reduced" timing of 144 hz refresh rate at your monitor's native res (e.g. 1920x1080).

You MUST choose LCD Reduced or you will get an out of range error.

You could also "enable" the extension block (default extension block). Enabling the extension block will give you 144 hz again, but it may also give you refresh rates you don't want to use, like 60hz.

Now you may ask: Why does strobelight disable the extension block?
The main reason is to make sure that Lightboost is enabled at all times. So the other refresh rates, like 50, 59.94, 60hz, etc, are removed so the driver won't try to use them. That way if you installed 100hz lightboost, you will ALWAYS be at 100hz lightboost.

Example: Ultra Street fighter 4.
This game forces 60hz refresh rate regardless of what the desktop is set to. MOST games use the desktop refresh rate, while some allow you to set the refresh rate yourself. Ultra street fighter 4 forces 60hz.

By using strobelight to install the lightboost resolutions, you can then force ultra street fighter 4 to run at 100hz lightboost intead of 60hz blurry mode.

Is there a drawback to this? Well, yes.
SOME games will crash if 60hz is missing. Dark souls 2 did this on release patch, if I recall correctly, but not anymore.

SOME games that default to 60hz (dark souls) will run at 100hz but will instantly crash if you go into the video game graphics options, because it expects 60hz to be there and it's not.

You did what? You haven't told me ANYTHING about what you did. Your post doesn't make sense because CRU is not a LightBoost program, and you didn't say anything about how you installed LightBoost or what you're using CRU for. If you wanted 144 Hz available with LightBoost installed, then why didn't you add it?

This sentence doesn't make sense either: "I cant find the cru program to uninstall all of it so my Nvidia drivers will work as before I installed Lightboost and CRU."

CRU is not something that's installed, and regardless of whether you used CRU or Strobelight, following the instructions would reset everything and bring 144 Hz back, so I don't understand what you mean. CRU and Strobelight don't mess with any NVIDIA driver settings. If 144 Hz is available in the Windows screen resolution settings and the NVIDIA control panel, then the problem has nothing to do with CRU or Strobelight.

I was looking at the Acer XG270HU:
-144Hz
-1ms GTG
-Freesync
-Good size (not stupidly large)
-Sadly not curved, but there don't seem to be ultra-slim bezels on curved displays with high refresh rates AND low response times.
I would prefer the Acer XB270HU with the ULMB backlight strobing feature to eliminate motion blur, but that (and GSYNC) only works with NVIDIA cards. The XG270HU doesn't have backlight strobing, but it supports FreeSync with AMD cards.

Thanks Toasty!

Given this, knowing I have a relatively new top end AMD card, is this the monitor you'd get in my place, or would you go for something else? Thanks again!

For AMD I would suggest the Benq XL2730Z with the updated firmware (V2 or newer when available), since it has a strobe backlight. Unfortunately, the 100hz and 60hz strobing is broken, You will be limited to 120hz and 144 hz blur reduction. They may have done a hardware panel upgrade on V2 firmware, as the image quality is massively improved compared to V1 firmware.

If you don't want freesync but still want blur reduction that can strobe from 60hz to 144 hz in 1 hz increments (the single strobe settings are still in the service menu for this monitor), get XL2720Z with Version 4 firmware, which also unlocks a new MBR only AMA high hidden mode (undocumented) which adjusts the overly aggressive AMA high setting (a problem with benq monitors for years) to Lightboost quality levels (the overdrive artifacts will look the same with this new mode and lightboost mode on the same screen, if you reduce the contrast down to under 20).

RE: Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
I'd been using a custom .inf EDID that I created myself for use with 3 Optoma GT720 projectors. Using the EDID allowed me to run 3840x800@120Hz with my R9 290 Crossfire setup. I just tried upgrading to a GTX 980ti though and couldn't use my EDID solution in Surround. In fact, with nvidia Surround it was difficult to even get 3840x800@60Hz running (which is the native resolution).

Looking through the geforce forums it looks like nvidia broke resolution selection for Surround users in a recent driver update. It also looks as though EDID overrides still aren't supported for Surround configurations (this was the reason I sold off my GTX 680 cards a couple years ago). I can't believe it's still not fixed - at this point I think it was done on purpose or something. Anyway, I tried CRU and it's a great tool but still can't work with Surround.

There was one glimmer of hope though. The following procedure would work (with a severe limitations which I'll outline below):
1) DDU in safe mode
2) reboot into normal mode and install nvidia driver
3) reboot as part of driver install
4) Use CRU to edit the timings for each projector display so that the only timing available was 1280x800@120Hz (I created a detailed timing for it that I know works from my old custom EDID and then I added the standard 1280x800@120Hz)
5) Use nvidia control panel to span displays in Surround. At this point the only resolution option available was 3840x800@120Hz. Select that and go.

Using that procedure I was able to try out BF4 at 3840x800@120Hz. Upon exiting the game however the center screen remained black with some artefacts at the top and I had to reboot. Upon reboot the 3840x800@120Hz option was not available. It's so dumb that I can get it to work briefly but then it fails. It's even worse that I can run each screen individually at 1280x800@120Hz but not in Surround mode.

Any insights ToastyX? Any way to get this to work?

RE: Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
Are there any plans to implement support for the DisplayID specification to allow for resolutions greater than 4095 x 4095?
